A while back we discussed a review of a recent book on the need for increased Biblical Literacy in the U.S. Today, the L.A. Times published an opinion piece by that book’s author, Stephen Prothero, “We live in the land of biblical idiots“.
Though we already discussed this, I thought I’d at least share this link. Perhaps a good discussion for this post is why two major nationally distributed newspapers would even give press to a book like this. I’m sure there have been plenty of books along this same lines published. I know people are saying all the time, we need to teach religion in our schools. What about Prothero’s book makes this “news” right now?

Why is this news?
It’s like the idiot congresman on the Colbert Report: calling for the posting of the Ten Commandments in the Capitol Building, without knowing what they are!
This is news because it exposes the ignorance of most of the right-wing, bible-bashing, let’s-put-God-in-America-again crowd.
At least, that’s why I think it’s news.

You know it’s news when Stephen Colbert picks up on the story. He discussed it on his show Tuesday night, discussing what he thought was the most outrageous fact of this story: that the people surveyed thought that Sodom and Gomorrah were married, which he claims is impossible since they were both gay. Stephen gave us a helpful ditty that will help us teach our children the true story of Sodom and Gomorrah: Sodom was a Sodomite, and Gomorrah was Gay-more-ah.

Like he said, it’s kind of hard to argue for a biblical argument against abortion when people don’t even know what the hell is in the Bible!
